I’ve always wondered why we do the things that we do. I wanted to understand people and their behavior because I wanted to connect to others in a more meaningful way. 

More honestly, I wanted to understand myself and why I was always so uncomfortable in my own skin. I was in such agony with myself all the time.

Why didn’t I ever feel enough?

How did I keep ending up in a place where I had to chase people around for something that they needed help with?

Why did I keep smiling like an idiot even though I was so pissed off at something mean that somebody just said to me?

One way to understand our behaviors is through understanding how our experiences shaped us into who we are today.  And deeper yet, how some experiences  – trauma  – can get locked into our bodies (known as samskaras in yoga philosophy).

In order to survive we need to develop adaptive strategies.  This might look like being charming, very self-reliant or highly nurturing.  It can also look like perfectionism, people pleasing, rebellion, self-isolation, or pushing people away.  There are endless concoctions of adaptive strategies.

When they seem unappealing like lying or being overly critical, we deem them as problematic behaviors and might even get to a point where we berate ourselves for behaving that way.

But a better way to look at these behaviors is by seeing them, as Linda calls them “superpowers”.

It was an honor to have Somatic and Trauma Therapist, Linda Thai, on this episode to teach us about what trauma is, what adaptive strategies are, and what it takes to heal so that we can let go of the adaptive strategies that no longer serve us.

About Linda Thai

Linda is an adjunct faculty member in the Social Work Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and specializes in trauma-informed care and compassion fatigue resilience skills; Mental health clinician at ND Systems, specializing in somatic therapies and trauma therapy.

She assists internationally renowned psychiatrist and trauma expert, Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, with his private small group psychotherapy workshops aimed at healing attachment trauma. In her work at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, she is responsible for training clinicians in all departments, including psychology, nursing and medicine. She has a Master of Social Work with an emphasis on the neurobiology of attachment and trauma.

Linda has studied Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, Brainspotting, Havening, Internal Family Systems, and structural dissociation of the personality. Linda has worked in Fairbanks, AK with those recovering from addiction, trauma, and mental illness. She is passionate about yoga, meditation, and mindfulness and bringing those gifts to her community.

The Connection Between Trauma, Meditation, and Psychology

At [9:00], Linda explains what trauma is and how it disrupts the spiritual and physical being by creating an unwelcoming home inside our bodies. When dealing with trauma, we develop adaptive strategies to disassociate ourselves from difficult life events. Linda ultimately bridges the gap between yoga philosophy and the psychological world through three concepts:

  1. taming your mind for mental clarity

  2. self-awareness in finding your true self

  3. aligning your adaptive strategies through transformational coaching.

Overcoming Loneliness

Linda shares trauma symptoms and adaptive strategies that we use to escape the anxiety that comes from distressing experiences and emotional neglect. In most cases, when coping with these experiences, we fall into loneliness and numb out the pain. She explains how you can turn this around, beat vulnerability, and be your true authentic self. Create Spaciousness in Supportive Relationships and Communities

At [21:00], Linda inspires us to participate in supportive communities where we have space to turn up authentically and turn off our adaptive strategies. These communities will help amp up your self-awareness through self-recognition and your appreciation of the adaptive process. She stresses the connections with communities as the key to self-healing, mental clarity, and self-authenticity.

How to Practice Self-Compassion and Curiosity For Healing

Linda shares some tips in yoga and meditation in understanding adaptive strategies and making some adjustments for purposeful living. We need to lift the veil from who we think we are and notice our adaptive behaviors or samskaras (yoga philosophy), followed by curiosity and appreciation. Practicing self-compassion one you’ve noticed your samskaras is much more important than “fixing it”, which might not even be needed. Reclaiming The Parts of Yourself That You Had To Give Away

When we define trauma as “ineffective action” it shows us that when we’re experiencing a traumatic situation, we are often unable to react or reach out. This ineffective action, while necessary for survival at times, causes us to give away a part of ourselves, such as the ability to love when we have been emotionally neglected. At [40:00], Linda talks about the path of reclaiming these parts of ourselves that we seemingly lost due to traumatic experiences.

Normalized Forms of Trauma

Linda explains that trauma can be defined in terms of resources - having too much or too little of something for too long. We need to realize that trauma, whether big or small, can wound our souls. We often normalize trauma but even something seemingly harmless goes on for an extended time or is repeated often enough, trauma can develop and shock our systems resulting in acute stress disorder or PTSD. How Trauma Shapes Our Identities

When we decontextualize trauma and our adaptive strategies, we realize that we have all experienced some form of it, shaping our identities, family dynamics, and cultural stereotypes. Traumas are passed down to us by our parents and families but can also be inter-generational due to colonialism and imperialism. Through proper meditation practice, integrating mindfulness, and joining related communities, you can reconnect to your inner-self and eliminate the mental struggle. Learn more at [50:00].

Create Spaciousness to Understand Your Reactions

At [53:20], Linda emphasizes that we are often taught to give away our authenticity to maintain relationships such as accepting a relative’s inappropriate behavior. With Linda’s tools, we can learn to appreciate these experiences and discern whether they make us feel unsafe or uncomfortable but also to try to understand our emotions. We’re often very quick to expressing our disappointments but the capacity to sit in discomfort for some time will always lead us to discernment and appreciation. 

One of the biggest lessons Linda has learned along the way...

Key Nuggets: Doing What You’re Meant To Do

  1. What was that moment like when you decided to go all in and fully committed to doing what you’re meant to? [6:50] 

About 2 and a half years ago, I was taking a Money Mind Academy class by Sean Croxton and I had the mind-blowing realization that I had a voice and something to offer. So, rather than just focusing on my private practice, I realized I could potentially help hundreds of thousands of couples if I shifted to working online.

2. How did you start? (for real, like way before being known for your work.  Did you quit your job first or did you do it on the side?) [8:25]

It was a long and still ongoing process of becoming a business person and creating my online presence. A few years ago, I enrolled in Marie Forleo’s B-School, a training program that teaches effective online marketing strategies to build your business and online presence. Her program really opened my eyes and made me realize I can help so many more people with being online. 

3. What was the first step you took to start shifting from the background (private practice) to the foreground (online presence)? [13:05]

One of the videos I created was an assignment for the Money Mind Academy class. We had to talk about one of our breakthroughs; mine was about realizing I have a voice and that I can help couples online. Fast forward to 2021 and I’ve already been on many podcasts, docuseries, and summits - in front of the camera being me and talking about what I love. 

4. Do you still run your private practice? How did you transition from your 9-5 ( or whatever former life you had) and into this life? [16:10]

I stopped seeing couples at the start of Covid as Washington State was one of the first states to shut down. I’ve been using all my time to create more courses and learn marketing strategies - I didn’t expect it but it is a full-time job. However, I will also return to private practice when the time is right!

5. What was one of your earliest successes and how you made it happen? [17:10]

I’d been wanting to create a high-quality, professional logo and my intuition was telling me to go with a certain person although their services were more expensive than others. It turned out great! So to me, that was a success - I listened to my own intuition and was more than happy with the outcome.

6. What was one time when you really wanted to quit?  What helped you keep going? [21:00]

With each new unfolding layer of business or each barrier, I often feel overwhelmed or want to quit. I didn’t expect to be where I am now, to be a businesswoman, and it can feel inundating. 

7. What’s your biggest resistance and how do you respond to it? [24:00]

Fear can really set me back. For example, when I have to write something I’ve not written before or ask someone for something. I might not know how or where to start, so I push it away for a while. My assistant is great and helps me break it down; we work it out together.

8. What’s the best thing you did that helped you create this life? [27:45]

I would say listening to my inner voice and getting coaching. Listening to voices of people that say you can dream - and if you could, what would you do? By answering these questions and diving in, I was able to create something I had never created before. Now, I’m creating a library of courses and videos and it’s my life’s work.

9. Top tangible action/tool that you’d recommend? [29:30]

For couples - remember what you love about your partner. Everyday, look at what you appreciate or admire about them, and then say it to them - don’t keep it to yourself.

10. Top advice that can help with mindset? [30:20]

You have to connect to your why. Remind yourself why you’re putting the work in - this can apply to your job, your mission, but also your relationships.

11. What do you do to check back and make sure that this is still the path for you (ie. that helps you decide that this is all worth it? [31:30]

Just even remembering I have a mission realigns me!

A multitude of studies have shown that having healthy relationships in your life can improve the quality of your life but and help you heal faster from illness among many other positive attributes.

Yet a quarrel with a loved one or a falling out of a friendship can put you out for days.  It could take over your whole mind making it hard to concentrate or work or fully enjoy what your day.

So how can you have more deep connection in your friendships and romantic relationships?

Signs That You’re In A Healthy Relationship

Although every relationship is different, Sarah shares some characteristics that most strong relationships have in common. Sarah’s insider tip is to be mindful of each other’s time by planning for difficult or meaningful conversations ahead of time. Use this time for conversations about any topic that seems relevant to the betterment of your relationship: whether it’s about housework, communication, or sex. Want More Connection? Learn to Be Vulnerable With Your Friends 

At [21:50], Sarah tells us how we can apply the tips we’ve learned about romantic relationships to our interpersonal ones. The pandemic has highlighted our need for connection—we all want to feel supported and heard, especially in times of need. To form these deep bonds, we need to open up and be vulnerable with our friends but also to do so mindfully. Just as we set the stage for meaningful conversations with our partners, we should plan ahead to create times for safe and vulnerable conversations with our friends.  

Establish Safety and Success With Small Conversations

What should we do when our partner doesn’t match our energy or motivation? Most of us would likely want to give up. However, Sarah gives us another solution to this. As previously mentioned, when problems arise, regardless of how small or large, schedule time to discuss these issues. We need to start small and build up a rapport with each other again. Listen to Your Intuition To Understand Your Friendships

How do you know which relationships are worthy of your time and effort? Like in other areas of our lives, when interacting with a friend, don’t hesitate to turn up your discernment and listen to your intuition. Do you feel relaxed around that friend? How much anticipation do you feel before the meeting? How safe do you feel? At [31:10], Sarah emphasizes that you need to take red flags seriously and be mindful of who you spend your time with. In addition, realize that some relationships need a different set of boundaries and terms. You might be super open and trusting with one friend but keep some things to yourself with another.

#1 Most Powerful Way To Build a Deeper Connection With Someone 

Once you’ve learned how to set up conversations in a safe way, you’re ready to take the next step to deepen connection: listen and validate that person’s values and experiences. The goal is to set aside your own beliefs and experiences and give them space to express themselves. However, it doesn’t end there - after listening and learning about their values, you should validate what you’ve heard by interacting with them and their stories. Show them that you understand and appreciate where they’re coming from. This will result in them feel heard, seen and more willing to open up. How To Honor and Work Through Differences In Relationships

Differences of opinion are bound to happen in every relationship whether romantic or platonic. Sarah explains that learning to speak about these disagreements in productive and respectful ways will in turn help deepen our relationships. We first need to honor each other's values and then realize that we’re on the same team. Bring Mindfulness Into The Office

Alex’s insights have taught us how to bring ourselves in alignment by not living in duplicity or multiplicity. Offering Tree is the result of Alex being able to bridge the gap between his business mindset and his mindfulness practice. Creating Origin Tree was an organic decision that stemmed from a need from within the wellness community. Key Nuggets: Doing What You’re Meant To Do

 1. How did you know that this idea was worth pursuing? [13:15]

I knew because we talked to people and listened. Initially, we conducted around 50 in-depth interviews and we kept hearing the same thing over and over again: a lot of companies are focused on bigger brands but almost none are focused on small, independent centers or teachers. We also recognized that we didn’t want to be a flashy brand, we wanted to be the company behind the scenes that helps elevate these studios, centers, and teachers.

2. What was your vision when you first had your idea for Offering Tree? [15:10]

Our vision was to create a platform and process to allow teachers and independents studios to feel like someone was there that had their back and was interested in hearing what they had to say. We wanted to create a platform that would impact countless communities and remove the heartaches and barriers of technology and business administration. 

3. What was that moment like when you decided to go all in and fully committed to doing what you’re meant to? [21:40]

There was that moment of potent potentiality that I could sense. It’s a visceral sense of a window of time and realizing this window has potential.  If I do nothing, that’s a choice. If I do something, that’s a different choice.  With Offering Tree, it was the moment that we opened the platform to have users start paying for it. People were actually spending their hard-earned money and I felt the responsibility and need to uphold our end of the deal. 

4. What did you have to let go of to create success? [25:35] 

I had to let go of perfection; this idea that somehow from day one it was going to be the manifestation of the vision I had. The minute I could release that sense of perfection, there was so much more possibility. I let go of perfection by connecting to the deeper aspiration of making it continuously better over time. I started focusing on small changes and being committed to the long term. 

5. What was one of your biggest challenges and how did you respond to it? [27:25]

One of the biggest challenges was continuing to practice mindfulness from within the company. We need to stay aligned to our own values even if we’re in a creating and manifesting process. It’s so easy to serve others and take yourself out of the equation. I still need to put myself at the top of my to-do list because otherwise, I’m going to drift, lose connection to my values, and burn out.

6. What was one of your earliest successes and how did you make it happen? [29:15]

The center that inspired Offering Tree, Yoga Sol closed its doors because of covid. Within the space of a week, we got their website up and running. They then started making half of what they were before but with double the attendance. I’m so happy that our platform helped them weather the storm. 

7. What was one time when you really wanted to quit.  What helped you keep going? [30:50]

Right now, I feel a sense of heaviness. I’m noticing so much noise in our space; a sort of frenetic energy of “accelerate, figure it out, go go go” and our company is trying to not be in this frenetic space. The positive feedback from our users helps me keep going. The other co-founders and I feel so nourished by the unsolicited feedback we receive from them. Sometimes we forget that we’re actually receiving support from the very people we’re offering support to.

8. What’s the best thing you did that helped you create this life? [34:05]

The biggest thing I did was to embrace this idea of knowing don’t know. If I don’t know something, then I’m living in a fixed state of not knowing about this topic. Knowing don’t know or in other words, if I know I don’t know something, then I’m curious to learn more about it. 

9. Top tangible action/tool that you’d recommend? [35:15]

The most practical tool is a combination of the practice of doing more by doing less. There’s a whole book on this called Essentialism by Greg McKeown. When you try to do a million things at once, you do none of them well. Focus on things you care about and go deep, then we can do them in a meaningful and intentional way.

10. What do you do to check back and make sure that this is still the path for you (ie. that helps you decide that this is all worth it? [36:15]

The most important thing for me is joy. It’s not that life is always joyful but even in the midst of suffering, we are able to recognize that there is joy.

About Alex Haley

Alex Haley (he/him) is a meditation teacher and former co-manager of a donation-based yoga studio. Alex’s work and expertise has been featured on The Big Know, MN Public Radio, Mashable.com and numerous podcasts. He is also one of the co-founders of the public benefit corporation OfferingTree, which provides an all-in-one platform for wellness professionals to build a website, manage scheduling, take payments and coordinate communication.

He completed an intensive four-year teacher training program through the Insight Meditation Society, Spirit Rock Meditation Center and the Insight Retreat Center. He has also been trained by the Center for Mindfulness, the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, and the Coaches Training Institute. In addition to his background in the yoga and meditation spaces, Alex is also trained in business, law and cognitive science.

How Disruption Can Ignite a Journey of Contemplation 

Alex shares a distinctive moment with us that set him on his mindfulness path. In an unlikely environment, in a math class at his public high school, his teacher asked them all to do nothing for 2 minutes. To Alex, this was something unfamiliar and it acted as a sort of disruption, shifting and disrupting his normal. At this moment, his teacher was highlighting stillness while he was still doing, the contrast reflected back at him. Finding Your Soul Guides

One thing I want to point out here is how normal finding our soul teachers feels - so normal that it sometimes goes unnoticed until it can be seen clearly in hindsight. In the journey of awakening to our true selves, sometimes we mistaken the experience to have to feel like something big - like as if clouds should part from the sky and unicorns come to sprinkle magic dust all over you then voila! you’re transformed.

In reality, it usually are the unassuming things like Alex’s math teacher, that grants us the big insights.

At [17:00], we hear more about the people that were monumental in helping Alex on his journey of contemplation. He highlights how a guru or a teacher can help guide us inwardly. You may not see them right now, but look around and you’ll find them in your own lives. These minor experiential moments whether with his math teacher or a course at college that piqued Alex’s interest and kept him moving in his journey. 

Becoming a Bridge/Connector For Two Worlds

Alex was working as an attorney but spent all of his free time doing retreats and mindfulness studies. It always felt like there was a gap or disconnect between these two sides. He was then approached to be an interpreter for these two worlds as he was the perfect candidate to help these opposing worlds interact and communicate. He ultimately bridged the gap between these worlds not just externally, but also internally for himself. Learn more at [22:00].

Resolving Our Internal Dichotomy

While working at the law firm and spending all his free time in mindfulness studies, Alex recognized a sense of false dichotomy within himself. It was like there were two versions of himself. This became even clearer when he came back to work from an extended meditation retreat and noticed that his analytical mind was so quiet. At this inflection point, he realized that he had been approaching practice with getting a particular experience as opposed to practicing to inform how to live your everyday life. He stopped subconsciously chasing experience while integrating his mindfulness practice into all parts of his life. Tune in for more at [26:00].

How to Prioritize and Remember Yourself

At [33:00], Alex shares two ways of remembering ourselves as we often forget to prioritize and contextualize ourselves in our everyday lives. While on a practical level, remembering ourselves, might mean concentrating on self-care and mindfulness techniques; in other contexts, this may be reflecting on how we engage with our worlds. Often we forget to integrate and connect with others and our actions, such as at work or in other everyday contexts. There’s a sort of duplicity or multiplicity to our lives or mindsets that we need to recognize and learn to integrate each part.

Applying Mindfulness to Your Daily Life

Alex realized that separating his two lives and mindsets wasn’t going to work in the long run; he needed to integrate his mindfulness mindset into his daily life. The assumptions and dichotomies we set up create very limiting binaries, instead, we need to view our different modes or mindsets as a spectrum. Alex shows us how we can recognize our false assumptions and relax them, for example, we can still be mindful even when we’re in the process of analyzing something. How to Break the Achiever Mentality

At [58:30], Alex explains how small changes matter more than huge, instant developments. We often worry that we aren’t progressing enough or that we can’t seem to finish our to-do lists quick enough; ultimately, the small changes that happen every so often, are transformative. Renouncing this sense of urgency and breaking the habit of an achievement mindset can create even more space and potential in your life. 

One of Your Biggest Lessons So Far

Small changes is what matters, not the big ones.  Small changes give a sense of spaciousness and not having to expect.

It’s not about what you gain but it’s about what you let go of.

Key Nuggets: Doing What You’re Meant To Do

  1. What’s your calling/purpose? [5:50]

    To lift people up, so they can achieve their dreams.

  2. What was that moment like when you decided to go all in and fully committed to doing what you’re meant to? [6:05]

    After moving to California and going through some big life changes, I started focusing on my health and shifting my mindset, which included changing my relationships. I actually got divorced not too long after, stopped drinking so much alcohol, and eating unhealthy foods. That’s when I realized my time was meant for me and not others. 

  3. How did you start? (for real, like way before being known for your work.  Did you quit your job first or did you do it on the side?) [8:10]

    I was going to therapy and doing all the things I mentioned before.  My therapist recommended I take pen to paper and take a good hard look at what I was spending my time on. I had no idea I’d be here years later teaching people to do the same. 

  4. a.) How did you transition from a 9-5 job? [10:20]

    I quit my job.

    b.) Did you have a formal business plan?

    No

  5. How’d you get your expenses covered?

    I’ve always had another source of income. I went from working full-time to part-time and then started creating my online yoga business. Later on, I started being a productivity consultant. The journey can ebb and flow. Three years ago, I had no clue what I’d be doing now!

  6. What was one of your earliest successes and how did it happen? [14:00]

    In 2009, I joined Toastmaster’s club because I was terrified of public speaking. I didn’t know that learning to provide people with feedback, working on how I speak, and how I lead would become a part of that. After starting a new job, my toastmaster’s club was too far away, so I got peer pressured into creating my own club. Before I knew it, I founded a toastmasters club with 40 members, and I was president for a year. The day I left, they celebrated me by having a Founder’s Day party. I was able to help others like me and gently challenge them to take a step towards giving a speech.

  7. What’s the best thing you did that helped you create this life? [18:45]

    My yoga teacher training.

  8. Top tangible action/tool that you’d recommend? [19:00]

    My time blocking guide is pretty swell.

  9. Top mindset advice that you’d recommend? [19:20]

    I keep coming back as time as an exchange of energy. A lot of us, as entrepreneurs, have a hard time charging what we’re worth. We in the wellness industry charge considerably less than other people. I would recommend taking a step back and looking at all that you’ve accomplished and know it’s ok to increase your rates. Examine your rate and go to a place that’s comfortable.

  10. What do you do to check back and make sure that this is still the path for you (ie. that helps you decide that this is all worth it?) [21:00]

    There is a beautiful prayer from a book called A Course in Miracles, and when I’m feeling tired or overwhelmed I will say this prayer: “Where will you have me go? What will you have me do? What would you have me say, and to whom?”

It takes time and effort to change these instilled habits but with self-care and self-reflection we can learn to change the way we work and set boundaries with others and also ourselves.

Tip 1) Learn to Manage and Assess Your Time

Key Nuggets: Doing What You’re Meant To Do

  1. What’s your calling/purpose?

    Helping people know who they are and feel good about who they are so that their feeling good can ripple out into the world.

  2. What was that moment like when you decided to go all in and fully committed to doing what you’re meant to?

    I was burning out in corporate again so I quit my job and went to Bali for two weeks.  I didn’t know what was next but I just knew that corporate wasn’t for me and I wasn’t going to wait for permission anymore.

  3. How did you start? (for real, like way before being known for your work.  Did you quit your job first or did you do it on the side?)

    I was a health coach in 2011 and practiced by doing trades with other coaches and also practiced saying my price. Eventually somebody who knew what I could offer referred me and that referral hired me. I was like “holy shit!”, practicing worked!

    I was so passionate that when I talked about it people were magnetized.

  4. a.) How did you transition from a 9-5 job? I quit my job.

    b.) Did you have a formal business plan? Didn’t know what I would do next after quitting my job. I ended up finding NLP and then almost had to work backward to see how to make this passion into a business.

  5. How’d you get your expenses covered?

    There were multiple things - I knew I would be leaving [corporate] because I wasn’t happy so I saved money and health savings cards for my health stuff.  Then racked up a lot of debt. And then I asked my husband for help (which was a huge transformation for me)!

  6. What was one of your earliest successes and how did it happen?

    My very first client was looking for a sense of purpose.  While she looked successful on the outside she’d lost her sense of self.  She didn’t know what direction to take.  I took her through the DECLARE process and she was one of my first breakthroughs.

  7. What was one time when you really wanted to quit.  What helped you keep going?

    I was working with a coach and it was feeling really hard and it almost seemed easier to get a job and get a paycheck. My coach helped me realized that I am on my path doing what I’m meant to do. I could do something else and suffocate and burnout or I can ride out this emotional wave.

  8. What’s usually your biggest resistance (ex. self-doubt, procrastination…) and how do you respond to it?

    The overwhelming amount of ideas that I have.  It’s hard to choose which one to choose and sometimes I just get overwhelmed and don’t start at all.

    I deal with it through meditation and getting clarity from my inner self and also it’s really helpful to ask for help from those around me to help keep me accountable.

  9. What’s the best thing you did that helped you create this life?

    Choosing me.

  10. Top tangible action/tool that you’d recommend?

    Human Design, EFT (to stay focused and let go), get a coach or support to help you keep choosing you!

  11. Top mindset advice that you’d recommend?

    Remember who you are.  The world will tell you who you should be, your family will tell you who you should be and it’s important that you stay connected to who you really are.

  12. What do you do to check back and make sure that this is still the path for you (ie. that helps you decide that this is all worth it?)

    I check in with my energy and make sure I’m still passionate about what I’m working on, I look back at testimonials and remind myself of transformations that I’ve helped clients with, and also volunteer to be of service.

    Connection.  To help people connect to themselves, each other, to nature and spirit.

  2. What was that moment like when you decided to go all in and fully committed to doing what you’re meant to?

    When I moved to Amsterdam from London.  I came (to Amsterdam) with a fresh slate and kept trusting my guidance even though I didn’t really know what I was doing here.

  3. How did you start? (for real, like way before being known for your work.  Did you quit your job first or did you do it on the side?)

    I didn’t actually think that teaching was for me because I wasn’t very confident. My coworkers at the time knew that I was a yoga teacher and kept asking if I would teach them. Finally I decided that we all have to start somewhere! I taught my very first class to my coworkers and they loved it!  I realized that sometimes you need to get out of your own way.


    I applied to studios but they didn’t let me even just cover for other teachers. I kept applying to studios, taught colleagues in the park and eventually rented my own space to teach in.

  4. How’d you get your expenses covered?

    I was afraid how I’d even make rent but within two months, I got offered teaching positions at the best studios.

    I said yes to everything and all teaching opportunities.  Also worked on inner work and money mindset.

  5. What was one of your earliest successes and how you made it happen?

    Launched my clothing brand and it was so cool to see people wearing it.

  6. What was one time when you really wanted to quit.  What helped you keep going?

    I was working very hard with my clothing brand. I worked way too hard in a masculine way where I was trying to make things happen.  I was on the edge of burnout and working way too hard. What helped was that I ended up finding a coach who helped me start working in a very different way.

  7. What’s the best thing you did that helped you create this life?

    Working with manifesting which helped switch from working hard to receiving.  And having a vision helps you serve more.

  8. Top tangible action/tool that you’d recommend?

    You need a morning practice to show up at your best.  Journaling or even more specifically, a gratitude journal can help.

  9. Top mindset advice that you’d recommend?

    Focus on what you want versus what you don’t want.

    The mind has a default negativity bias but don’t fall for it - focus on why you can!

  10. What do you do to check back and make sure that this is still the path for you (ie. that helps you decide that this is all worth it?)

    Reconnect to your vision in some way.  Be more in the moment and follow the fun. Being more intuitively in the in the moment.

In our modern information and technology-driven world, we can forget that nature runs in cycles and rhythms. One such cycle is the waxing and waning of the moon.

In this episode, I speak with Simona Schimanovich, a certified yoga teacher who has been incorporating moon energy into her practice for many years. Simona's yoga journey began when she was 29, living in her native Austria, and navigating her way through a difficult divorce. To cope with this crisis, she turned to yoga to find clarity and peace. This divorce was the catalyst that sparked her devotion to yoga and eventual exploration of Lunar energy.

Simona shares the breakthrough she had that finally propelled her to doing more work around the Moon energy. One day, after drinking her third cup of coffee and still feeling exhausted, she realized that it was bizarre to try and operate “like machines” rather than honor our own natural cycles. Understanding that life is not linear can help you become more efficient and fulfilled

In the Western culture, we perceive time as linear, always moving in a forward direction at a constant pace. Simona explains that there are rhythms in nature and when we align ourselves with these rhythms, we become more efficient and fulfilled.

She shares how ancient cultures and modern Chinese and Hindu cultures are aware of this fact with celebrations based on the Lunar calendar. Simona explains that the underlying principle of moon energy is that there is a time for everything. A time to start. A time to stop. A time to be creative and energetic, and a time to rest. Paying attention to the moon can help you identify these moments resulting in greater fulfillment and happiness. Once we change our perception from things being linear to understanding there is a rhythm, we get acceptance.

Working with the Moon phases to optimize energy

Simona walks us through the phases of the moon starting with a dark new moon which is ideal for setting intentions and turning inwards. As the moon waxes, which is the rebirth of light, energy starts to build until the moon is at its brightest – the full moon. The full moon is a time where the energy is greatest and can be perfect for any activity be it strong yoga practice, shaking, or dancing. The last two weeks of the cycle, when the moon dissolves back to darkness, is accompanied by a time of releasing, closing, and acceptance. Where do I start? Take these small steps to begin working with the moon

Simona shares her recommendations for how beginners can start working with moon energy. Notice what cycle the moon is in and how your everyday experiences and emotions are affected. Then use the new moon as a time to set intentions and affirmations for the coming month.

Working with the moon to set intentions and manifest desires

Simona talks about how setting intentions at the right time is akin to planting seeds. Plant a seed at the wrong time and it won't grow. Plant an intention at the wrong time and it will be weak. Simona shares a few tips to create stronger manifestations such as being in the right headspace before setting an intention to ensure it comes from the heart and not the mind. She also suggests writing down the intention and affirmations and keep repeating them while the moon is waxing. Finally imagine the feeling when the intention is fulfilled. What emotions bubble to the surface? How will you act? How will you celebrate?

Ensure that you are ready and open to receive without internal resistance. Moon energy has helped as it contains more receptive energy than active solar energy. If you ask, make sure you are willing to receive.

You are all-powerful creators that are creating your reality. Don't put your life and energy in the hands of others, take it back and create your own life.

Episode 183: How He Got There - Author, Yoga Teacher, Spiritual Mentor with Hari-kirtana das

How they got there episodes is where we get to hear stories from experts, yoga teachers, healers, coaches…basically anybody who doesn’t have a typical job title.

These are their for real, for real stories about how they followed their heart’s calling to do what they’re meant to do. This means we get to hear the sticky middle and all - How’d they start? Did they have a plan? How did they make money?

Hopefully in hearing their stories it will help inspire you to live your purpose or lend comfort especially if you’ve come across a hard part in your journey.

Today we hear from yoga teacher, spiritual mentor and author of the book In Search Of The Highest Truth::Adventures In Yoga Philosophy, Hari-kirtana das, who you heard from in Episode 182: Exploring The Meaning Of Life Using Yoga Philosophy.

Although Hari has been practicing yoga for the better part of 50 years and has a wealth of experience under his belt, he still had to start from somewhere. In this episode, you’ll learn how he transitioned from a career in motion design and into one where he spends his days teaching at yoga teacher trainings and creating online programs for yoga philosophy.

My favorite takeaway from all this is that he didn’t have a plan either! It seems that most of the guests who have shared their stories didn’t have a plan - even the most planful ones. It seems that when it comes to pursuing heartfelt endeavors like living your purpose and doing what you’re meant to do, the approach needs to be much different than let’s say how you would plan to do your taxes.

In pursuing your heart’s calling, there is no formula. There is no cut and dry rules. And that’s not a bad thing - it’s more intuitive and asks you to rely on your inner wisdom rather than an external set of rules that you should follow.

  1. What’s your calling/purpose?

    My service is to share my understanding and realization of the highest truth. Teaching others how to learn to see and experience it rather than just understand it intellectually.

  2. What was that moment like when you decided to go all in and fully committed to doing what you’re meant to? 

    Decide to continue with motion design clients or teach yoga full time. Once I decided, things happened that helped me become a full time yoga teacher.

  3. How did you start? (for real, like way before being known for your work.  Did you quit your job first or did you do it on the side?)

    I was going to yoga studios to practice before teaching and actually got asked to teach.

    In one incident, a teacher who was leading a teacher training had a guy who was supposed to teach kirtan but he didn’t show up. Somebody who knew me asked me to teach it.

  4. Did you have a formal business plan or idea of how long you’d do this for?

    No I didn’t, which is unlike me because I’m usually a very planful person.

  5. How’d you get your expenses covered?

    Got paid as a guest teacher at YTTs (yoga teacher trainings) and also with the support of a very loving partner.

  6. What was one of your earliest successes and how you made it happen?

    His students actually followed him to a new class that he was teaching and it occurred to him that he’d been developing relationships with people.

  7. What was one time when you really wanted to quit.  What helped you keep going?

    I wanted to quit so I quit.

    *this part of the conversation was actually sooooo awesome because he specified that he quit the things that didn’t matter.

  8. What’s usually your biggest resistance (ex. Self-doubt, procrastination…) now?  How do you deal with it?

    Procrastination like checking emails, check NY Times. Putting the distractions away really helps.

  9. What’s the best thing you did that helped you create this life?

    Connected with an online entrepreneurial coach and actually took B-School with Marie Forleo (fun tidbit: that’s how me and Hari actually met).

  10. Top tangible action/tool that you’d recommend?

    Develop a mailing list and offer something of value that people can have.

  11. Top mindset advice that you’d recommend?

    Have a mindset to be a servant for something greater than yourself.

  12. What do you do to check back and make sure that this is still the path for you (ie. that helps you decide that this is all worth it?)

    I get up early and practice mantra meditation: glorification, gratitude, repentance and request for benediction.

Yes! Yoga sure can. Yoga philosophy and the ancient texts like the Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali and the Bhagavad Gita are essentially handbooks to enlightenment and a life full of bliss and joy.

The only problem is that they’re kind of hard to understand! And it can be confusing which text to tackle first.

In this episode, we get to talk with Hari-Kirtana Das, an expert in yoga philosophy. He explains which order we should read the texts in, how to make them more approachable and how to apply these ancient wisdom to our everyday lives.

Hari-kirtana das is a yoga teacher, spiritual mentor, online course creator, and the author of 'In Search of the Highest Truth: Adventures in Yoga Philosophy.' Understanding Yoga Philosophy at the Highest Level

Hari shares that yoga philosophy at any level is reality distinguished from illusion for the benefit of all. It’s all about pursuing an understanding of our relationships with others, the world, ourselves, and the source of all the world and ourselves. It’s also about taking the theoretical knowledge of yoga and practising it so we can attest that it actually works. Knowledge of the ultimate goal (Why you are practising yoga) is also critical. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali emphasize practising yoga in a particular sequence and Hari dives into some of the sutras and breaks them down for us so we can understand them better. How Yoga Philosophy Teaches Us Who We Are

Hari highlights the fact that Yoga philosophy describes the characteristics of the true nature of the self with the first characteristic being eternality. This is found in the first instruction from Krishna to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita, which teaches us that we are eternal and that we are eternally ourselves. The second characteristic is purity and it refers solely to the absence of influence of a material nature. Hari goes on to talk about the three qualities of material nature that we must be aware of. The practice of Pratyāhāra enables us to discover the third characteristic which is Joy and how it comes from within us and not the outside world. Hari goes on to share more at 09:54.


The Bhagavad Gita: The Song of God

To learn what the Bhagavad Gita scripture encapsulates, Hari says that one has to approach it as looking at the world from God’s point of view. Bhagavad Gita offers us the best way to reach the perfection of Samadhi and this is where Hari advises people to begin. To learn more about this from Hari go to 21:14 in the episode.


The Most Recommended Translation of the Bhagavad Gita

Even as Hari works on his own translation of the Bhagavad Gita, he still recommends the translations by Graham M. Schweig and H.D Goswami. What’s valuable about Graham M. Schweig’s translation is that it retains the poetry of the original Sanskrit and explains why the Bhagavad Gita is a love song. Hari feels that in some areas Graham sacrifices clarity for poetry which H.D. Goswami makes up for in his translation by being more rigorous in the academic studies carried out. Hari emphasizes the importance of putting the two translations together because they complement each other. He also talked about the first edition he ever read about the Bhagavad Gita and shared his insights on what it has to teach us. Tune in for more at 26:03.

The Meaning of Life 

Once we get some level of understanding of the Bhagavad Gita, we are able to have a clear view of where we are coming from and where we want to go. At 38:53, Hari points to the desire that we all have to see the universe revolving around us and how that brings up envy and animosity in our hearts towards the person who is actually at the center of the universe. That drives us into material consciousness where we develop the illusion that we can be the center of the universe and so we do everything we can every day to achieve that. Sometimes we achieve it but since it keeps shifting, we keep on breaking our backs to get back there again. That, as Hari explains, is the definition of the false ego (Ankura). The opposite of that is the concept of spiritual consciousness and he demystified it all farther for us in the most insightful of ways, so don’t miss out.

Manifestation in the Modern World

At 49:51, the question was based on how we can work towards fulfilling our desires while also putting everything in the hands of the supreme, and Hari explains that we must dovetail our desires to the desires of the supreme. Manifestation happens when we connect with something bigger than ourselves and let the light of that thing shine through us. But in the modern world, we get frustrated because we believe that the manifestation of our personal desires is achieved from our own efforts.

  1. What’s your calling/purpose?

    I don’t know yet, actually in a phase of transition right now. (This was so awesome because it really shows that we are ever changing beings, even when it comes to what’s calling out to us.)

  2. What was that moment like when you decided to go all in and fully committed to doing what you’re meant to? 

    The second big trip with my husband – it was like a U-turn where at one point you just can’t go back. You’re totally into it.

  3. How did you start? (for real, like way before being known for your work.  Did you quit your job first or did you do it on the side?)

    Sold my rental property for an influx of cash to be able to invest into my business.

    Also asked the studio that I was working for if I could somehow work remotely and they actually said yes!

  4. Did you have a formal business plan or idea of how long you’d do this for?

    haha not at all! I was just really determined to find joy!

  5. How’d you get your expenses covered?

    Answered that a little earlier but basically: sold rental property, my World Wanderers podcast was growing, started a second podcast called MBOM and working for the yoga studio remotely.

    I also did random side jobs like work as a freelance for website design and taught English to kids in China

  6. What was one of your earliest successes and how you made it happen?

    Started the MBOM podcast and even though I felt like an imposter and like a super new yoga teacher, I reached out to people to be my first guests and they said YES!

  7. What was one time when you really wanted to quit.  What helped you keep going?

    Haha like once every two weeks but coming back to my why is so helpful.  Why it excites me and also adding things to my week or day that makes me feel good. 

  8. What’s usually your biggest resistance (ex. Self-doubt, procrastination…) now?  How do you deal with it?

    Selling myself is scary – self doubt and fear of rejection. This shows up as procrastination like being on social media for hours.

    What helps is journaling to dig deeper into why I have that self doubt. Like what’s behind the scrolling?  Why didn’t I do what I needed to do?

  9. What’s the best thing you did that helped you create this life?

    Pushing through the hard moments and trusting my instincts and following what I was passionate about.  Trusting that the things (like the corporate job) that weren’t for right for me, wasn’t right for me.

  10. Top tangible action/tool that you’d recommend?

    Meditation and journaling and self yoga practice to tune in.

    Also time to self with nothing but you and your own head

  11. Top mindset advice that you’d recommend?

    Listen to yourself and turn off all the noise (ex. Social media, news…)

  12. What do you do to check back and make sure that this is still the path for you (ie. that helps you decide that this is all worth it?)

    Love doing goals with husband twice a year and we look at what’s working and what’s not working
